On this day we were just out and about on a Sunday drive in Iowa. As you know, Josh and I just drive not knowing where our destination will be until we stumble upon it. And today we ended up all over. First we followed signs that said "Sandy Beach".
Coming from San Diego we had to see what a "sandy beach" in Iowa looks like....we found it. It looked like a marsh/lake...my favorite part was the sign, instead of a sign saying back your boat up here it says the road ends in the water. Just a little funny to me.
Then we drove on following a dirt road, by the way I am not a fan of dirt roads, especially in his little Honda. But I will say some of the dirt roads were kinda cool, with ups and downs, a little like a roller coaster.
After a little while of following this dirt road we came across a little area where they race dirt bikes and ATV's it was funny to see that in the middle of no where, but I guess that is where you would have that, in the middle of no where, to not bother anyone.....Little kids were riding them too, jumping off little bumps.
Then as we continued on we randomly decided to drive to this place we heard about in Des Moines called Zombie Burger....we figured we were half way there anyway so off we went.
We followed my iPhone's directions...which got us a bit lost, thank you Siri. Let me tell you, there is nothing like drive an hour and a half to a place where you have no idea where it is with an 8 year old in the backseat asking "are we there yet?" every five minutes. While driving in circles we found some interesting things, a bunch of statue/art in a little park area (some pretty awesome looking things) then we saw some people in basketball jersey's on with stars on the leg and I made the joke "oh hey, the Harlem Globetrotters are in town"....as it turns out it was the Harlem Globetrotters hahahahaha and being an 80's kid, I was all excited.
So after driving around for 15 minutes, I finally called the restaurant to see where the hell they were. The girl who answered was really nice and explained how to get there from where we were....it was one of the few times my iPhone maps let me down....you let me down Siri, let me down bad.
When we walked in I was blown away...this place is awesome!!! The whole layout is fantastic.
The menus are news papers...you open it and turn it over. All the food items have "zombie" related names (of course!!)
Our server, James, was pretty rad! He gave excellent service with an added level of creepiness, by popping up out of no where to answer a question we might have had.
Maddy and I had to try their cereal shakes, she had the Crunch Shake (Captain Crunch) and I had the Zombie Unicorn (Fruity Pebbles). They were good....but, sorry Zombie Burger....The Corvette Diner shakes are still the best in my book...

The atmosphere was just the best. This is the place to go for anyone who likes zombies or horror movies.
There was something to see around every corner.
I tried a drink called the Socket which had blueberry vodka, lime, strawberry puree and an eyeball garnish (a baby onion). It was good not too strong and a little tangy, you can totally taste the strawberries...yum!
Josh and I shared a burger and Maddy had a hotdog. Our burger was called "they're coming for you Barbara" it was loaded with cheese (which I love) the bun was a grilled cheese sandwich, there was bacon and caramelized onions on it...pretty damn tasty if you ask me. We also shared some Garlic bacon and blue cheese fries....those were also pretty awesome.
Maddy had a Club Dog (I think) it had guacamole, bacon, gorgonzola cheese and tomato. Maddy really liked it, well everything except the cheese. Eh, she finished it and her shake.

After we finished up I went to ask about buying a t-shirt (because really you have to have one) then I took the opportunity to take some more pictures above the bar. Where a man sitting there started asking me what movies the clowns were from.

As we were leaving me made our way towards the bathroom we saw some spoof (funny) movie posters. And some other zombie decor.
can you see me in the picture? hahaha |
even the bathroom signs were zombies |
This was a really fun adventure and got to see a super awesome restaurant with extremely awesome service (oh how I've missed that). We will definitely be back.....it is totally worth driving an hour and a half to eat here.
